The birthplace of one of the most ancient civilizations in Europe

Crete is a land steeped in mythology, and exploring its ancient ruins is like stepping into a time portal. The legendary Palace of Knossos, once the seat of King Minos, beckons with tales of the Minotaur and the labyrinth. The ancient architect Daedalus had built the palace’s labyrinth, where the notorious creature Minotaur lived. Daedalus and his son, Icarus, kept captive there, managed to escape by making wings from feathers and wax. However, Icarus flew so close to the sun that the wax melted, the wings were destroyed, and he fell into the sea, near the island, which took his name, Icaria.

Feel the echoes of history as you wander through the remnants of Minoan civilization, on the legendary Palace that was firstly built around 1900 BC. The palace was continually renovated and expanded over the next five centuries until its final destruction around 1350 BC.

Walk around the Old Town of Chania

Nestled on Crete’s northwestern coast, Chania is a gem that deserves its own spotlight. Step into a postcard-worthy scene where Venetian, Ottoman, and Greek influences converge to create an enchanting labyrinth of narrow alleys, colorful buildings, and hidden courtyards.

Begin your exploration at the iconic Venetian Harbor, where there are located the famous centuries-old lighthouse, accompanied by picturesque waterfront cafes. Lose yourself in the vibrant mix of boutiques, artisan shops, and traditional tavernas that line the cobblestone streets. Admire the intricate architecture of the Venetian mansions and the Turkish fountains that show the rich history of the biggest town of the western part of the island.

  • Dakos: This is a classic Cretan dish that features a hard barley rusk topped with chopped tomatoes, crumbled feta or mizithra cheese, olives, capers, and a generous drizzle of Cretan olive oil. It’s simple, yet incredibly flavorful.

Enjoy the famous Hospitality of Crete

The tradition of hospitality in Crete has a history spanning many centuries. Welcoming and caring for the traveler are literally in the nature of the Cretan people.

Traditional hospitality in Crete dates back to ancient times, when, according to mythology, Zeus, the king of Gods, was born in the mountains of Crete. Zeus, also called Xenios (Welcoming), has historically linked the concept of hospitality with the island, a connection that has been kept alive for millennia in the daily life of the Cretans.
